A new law will soon mandate that workplaces in England enhance their recycling efforts, promoting a cleaner environment for everyone.

From 31 March 2025 (or 31 March 2027 for micro-firms), all workplaces (businesses and non-domestic premises) in England have a legal duty to present the following wastes separated:

Dry recyclable materials – plastic, metal, glass, paper and card

Non- recyclable (black bin waste)

Food waste

What will need to be recycled?

Workplaces will need to separate the materials listed below for recycling. Workplaces will also need to arrange for the waste to be collected separately from other waste.

  • paper
  • card
  • glass
  • metal
  • plastic
  • food waste
  • non-recyclable (black bin waste)

Workplaces that must follow these rules

How Officeworx can help you get ready.

As a business, we can assist companies in England with the new transition to recycling by sourcing the correct bins for your workplace. We have several specialist facilities suppliers who stock a wide range of recycling bins, storage solutions and signage to help your business make the lawful transition.

Choosing the right bins for your workplace is important for maintaining organisation, cleanliness, and efficiency. Here are some key factors to consider:

**Type of Waste**: Identify the types of waste generated in your workplace—general waste, recyclables, organic waste, hazardous materials, etc. This will help determine the kind of bins you need.

**Size and Capacity**: Consider the volume of waste your workplace generates. Larger bins may be necessary for high-traffic areas, while smaller bins can suffice for individual workstations.

**Material and Durability**: Choose bins that are made from durable, easy-to-clean materials. Ensure they can withstand the wear and tear of a workplace environment.

**Colour and Labelling**: Use colour-coded bins to make it easier for employees to identify where to dispose of waste. Clearly label each bin to enhance recycling efforts and reduce contamination.

**Accessibility**: Position bins in easily accessible locations, making it convenient for employees to dispose of waste properly. This encourages proper use and helps maintain a clean workspace.

**Compliance**: Ensure that the bins comply with regulations regarding waste disposal and recycling. Contact your waste management provider to understand if you need to put additional processes in place.

**Involvement of Employees**: Involve employees in the selection process. This can help raise awareness about waste management and encourage better disposal practices. By considering these factors, you can choose the right bins that will help promote a cleaner and more organised workplace.

Report non-compliance

If you do not comply with these requirements by 31 March 2025 (or 31 March 2027 for micro firms), you are at risk of receiving a compliance notice from the Environment Agency.
