Whether you work from home, in an office or in a hybrid environment, the way your workstation is set up can have a significant impact on your comfort and wellbeing throughout the working day.

A poorly adjusted chair incorrectly positioned monitor or unsuitable desk height can contribute to discomfort and strain over time. Fortunately, a few simple adjustments can help you create a more comfortable and supportive working environment.

Start with your chair

Your chair is one of the most important parts of your workstation setup. Adjust the seat height so that your feet can rest flat on the floor or are comfortably supported by a footrest. Your knees should be positioned at approximately a 90-degree angle. The backrest should provide comfortable support for your lower back, while the tilt should encourage an upright but relaxed posture. Take the time to adjust your chair properly rather than simply sitting down and getting to work.

If you think it’s time for a new chair, did you know that we have a selection of ergonomic chairs available to try in our office? You can test them before you buy, helping you find the right chair for your individual needs and comfort.

Position your keyboard correctly

Your keyboard should be positioned so that your arms can rest comfortably by your sides, with your elbows at approximately 90 degrees. If your desk or chair height makes it difficult to achieve a comfortable position, consider adjusting the height of your chair or using a footrest. The aim is to avoid reaching, hunching or placing unnecessary strain on your shoulders and arms.

Keep your mouse close

Position your mouse close to your keyboard so you don’t have to repeatedly reach across your desk. Your wrist should remain straight and in a neutral position while using it. Where possible, alternating between your left and right hand can also help reduce the strain placed on your dominant wrist, particularly when carrying out repetitive tasks over long periods.

Adjust your monitor

Position your monitor so that the top of the screen is at, or just below, eye level. This helps you maintain a more comfortable and natural head and neck position while working. If you need help finding the right height, speak to the Officeworx team about our range of monitor risers, designed to help you position your screen comfortably and correctly..

You can also tilt the screen to help reduce glare and improve viewing comfort. If you find yourself constantly looking down at your monitor or leaning forward to see the screen, it may need adjusting.

Make sure your desk works for you

Your desk and surrounding work area should provide enough space for all the equipment you use regularly, allowing you to work comfortably without feeling cramped. If you use a sit-stand desk, adjust it to the correct height for both sitting and standing. When seated, your elbows should be at approximately 90 degrees, while the desk should be adjusted to a comfortable working height when standing.

Alternating between sitting and standing throughout the day can help you vary your working position and encourage more movement during the working day. At Officeworx, we’ve seen a significant increase in companies choosing sit-stand desks for the workplace, helping employees to easily adjust their working position throughout the day.

Consider your lighting

Poor lighting can contribute to eye strain, fatigue and headaches. Try to position your workstation to reduce glare on your monitor. Blinds can be used to help shield your screen from bright sunlight, while a desk lamp can provide additional lighting where needed. A well-lit workspace should allow you to work comfortably without excessive brightness or distracting reflections.

Use a headset for telephone calls

Where possible, using a headset when making telephone calls can help you maintain a more upright posture. Holding a telephone between your head and shoulder can place unnecessary strain on your neck and shoulders. A headset allows you to keep your hands free and your head and neck in a more natural position while speaking. If you need help finding a headset compatible with your phone system, the Officeworx team would be happy to discuss your requirements and help you find the right product for your telephone system.

Remember to move regularly

Even the best workstation setup cannot replace regular movement throughout the day. Repetitive tasks performed over long periods can increase the risk of muscle strain and injury. Where possible, vary your tasks, take regular breaks, stretch and move regularly, and alternate between sitting and standing. Small changes to your working routine can make a big difference to your overall comfort.
